Another week of upsets and another week of shake-ups in the Comprank system for NCAA Div I-A football. LSU pulls out the win with one second to spare, Ohio State finally faces a decent opponent and nearly literally almost gives away a 24-point lead, and yet another unbeaten falls from grace. It's still LSU's lead to lose IMHO, and I really can't see how they give up that top spot at this point unless they manage to lose again, as their strength of schedule is gaudy. Next week's away game at Alabama represents that last decent regular season chance to falter, and assuming they win out, the only other pre-bowl road bump is the SEC championship game against [insert team name here...] from the SEC-East. Dennis Erickson's Arizona State squad is getting major props from my system, as well they should. Just a bit hard to believe hat it's not USC at the top of the Pac-10 conference. One thing's for sure though -- the Sun Devils' next 4 games are brutal (Cal, @Oregon, @UCLA, USC). Right behind them though is another Pac-10 foe in Oregon, who also must play a brutal slate of games to finish out the season. The conference winner might be going to New Orleans for the BCS title game, but they're going to be really beat up before then. Still not a lotta love for the Buckeyes in my system, although a win in Happy Valley on Saturday night could change that. Even so, the last four games, while much more challenging than the previous eight, still probably won't be enough to push OSU into the top 2 spots without some help from above. The pollsters don't see it that way, but they're locked into their ridiculous pre-season polls and their unwritten rule of movement by attrition and very seldom by earning it, although the usual way is to move upwards. Last time a #1 team got bounced out of the top spot without losing was Penn State in 1994, and that debacle still hurts the Nits to this day. Along those lines, we have Boston College. BC has played a slightly more difficult schedule than OSU, but their defense is certainly not as good. They are moving up in my system, but I still can't see them as the #2 team in the nation, as the polls have done. Guess we'll find out for sure when they travel to Blacksburg for the obligatory Thursday night VT game. Last but certainly not least, I've been watching a team sneak up into the tops of my system, namely Virginia. They've quietly gone about their business this year and have now broken into the top 10, coming in at #9 this week. The polls haven't caught on to them yet, but that's due to change next week when they finish the season against Wake, @Miami, and the home finale against rival VT. It's very possible that the Cavs could be BCS bound this season -- we'll see.
